Testimonials

I was about to sell my business and wanted to clean and reseal my vinyl floors to improve the looks of them before having people over for inspection of the property. I did a booking with another company but was horrified when I realized that my floor was back to its horrible look in less than two weeks. I carefully looked up other cleaning companies, scared that I would chose the wrong cleaning company. A friend of mine recommended Tile Cleaners, but after what happened to my floor last time I got it cleaned I was really skeptic, but gave it a go. All I can say is thank you guys so much for a quick response and a good job. I sold the office and left your contact details with the new owner for future cleaning.

Brian Hook, Bayswater, WA

We got our tiles more than 25 years ago. We were told that we had a solvent sealer on our tiles, which apparently most companies wouldn't be able to strip off. However we rang a couple of places to check them out. No luck. A friend of mine recommended Tile Cleaners. We rang the guys and they agreed to have a look the next day. We decided to go ahead with the job after getting a satisfactory quote. Tile Cleaners team stripped and resealed our old tiles. We are very grateful for your help guys. Thank you again.

Olivia and Andrew Clark, Hornsby, NSW

I just got new tiles laid in my house that were very expensive. I needed to get them sealed but couldn't afford to pay much for it. On the other hand I didn't want to go for a company offering cheap and unreliably services. My boss recommended Tile Cleaners, saying that the company's prices were reasonable and that they offered quality service when he used them. I contacted them and ended up doing a booking with them. It is very pleasant to know that there are companies out there who actually care about providing very high quality services for affordable prices. I gave your contacts to my sister. Thank you for the job you did

What is Travertine?

Travertine flooring is a very stylish material that is functional and aesthetically attractive while bringing a very appealing, old-world character to any home or business. Travertine pavers are especially attractive around the swimming pool and surrounds with no two tiles looking the same. Travertine will often appear fibrous or concentric and can come in a white, tan or a cream like colour.

Travertine is formed in mineral springs, especially around hot springs, underground rivers and in limestone caves. Travertine is different to limestone and marble, which are metamorphic rocks, with the main characteristic of travertine being the holes within the stone created as a result of gases escaping as the travertine is formed.

By the time it is quarried, travertine is naturally beautiful - a smooth, dense stone that exhibits a notable creamy colour that evokes a certain old-world refinement.

Sealing Travertine Floors

Two main sealing options exist for travertine tiles

  • Deep Penetrating Impregnating Sealer
    (Transparent Finish/Colour Enhancing Finish)

  • Topical Sealer
    (Gloss/Satin/Matte Finish)
deepshield Travertine

A deep penetrating impregnating sealer protects travertine and grout from water and oil based stains by chemically reacting with the surface pores using nano-technology to create a breathable protective barrier. An impregnating sealer protects the travertine surface and grout from absorbing stains while also resulting in cleaning and maintenance becoming much easier. Australia's Deepshield® range of impregnating water based sealer's, offer long term benefits lasting for up to 10 years while Deepshield Gold®, based on the latest fluoro-bond technology lasts for up to 15 years. A penetrating impregnating transparent sealer enters the pores of your stone and, once cured will not change the look of the tile or stone. A penetrating colour enhancing sealer is designed to enhance and enrich the natural look of stone surfaces.

Tile Cleaners® are the experts at applying all types of sealer and will ensure your travertine looks its absolute best. Tile Cleaners® experienced technicians can apply a topical sealer when especially required to create a high gloss, satin sheen or matte finish to your surfaces. Topical sealer is also helpful in situations where the old solvent based sealer can not be completely removed or when required to hide certain types of damage. Topical sealer's have a life expectancy of around 3 years.

You can easily test how porous your natural travertine is by applying a drop of water to the surface and watching how the water is absorbed by the travertine. You can then see how any type of water based stain can be absorbed by the travertine tile surface and grout.

Types of sealer's used on Travertine tiles

Water based sealer's and solvent-based sealer's can both be used on travertine, however unless absolutely required for a specific reason, we always recommend applying a water based sealer that doesn't produce harmful fumes during application and removal. Water based sealers are easier to apply and remove and also require less drying time. One of the most popular product ranges available is Australian made Deepshield® quality impregnating water based sealer's that prolong the life of your surfaces by taking full advantage of recent advancements in nano technology, providing unmatched long-term stain resistance and reliability.

deepshield moisture travertine

It is important to ensure the correct water based sealer is applied to your travertine tile, which will also depend on whether they are indoors or outdoors as most sealer's will not last long outside due to being designed for internal use. If your travertine is outdoors, it is important to use a water based sealer that is specifically designed for outdoor travertine.

There are two types of impregnating clear sealer, water based sealer & solvent based. In the past solvent based sealers were more widely used as they used to absorb deeper into the travertine and grout and would also last longer. Today however, thanks to new technological advancements, it is recommended only to use water based sealer's, that last much longer and cause less potential damage to health and property.

Solvent based products are more difficult to apply and can create major problems when applied incorrectly as they are very hard to remove. Tile Cleaners® recommend our clients apply a long lasting water based sealer such as a quality product from Australia's Deepshield® range of sealer's to their travertine tiles and grout. Topical sealer's (glossy plastic coating over the top of the travertine) are still used on travertine, but these older style sealer's can trap moisture in the stone and make the surface slippery when wet. When a topical sealer wears in higher traffic areas, the entire surface usually needs to be stripped and re-sealed.

It is very important to ensure that tiles achieve their cleanest possible condition prior to being sealed. This will protect the appearance of the tile, and importantly ensure that there won't be any dirt, stains or other debris caught under the layer of sealant.

To provide the best possible protection from oil and water-based stains; to maintain the look and slip resistance of your travertine and to prevent damaging moisture from being trapped within the stone, it is recommended to seal your travertine with a high quality, invisible, fully breathable impregnating sealer.

Frequently Asked Questions

The process of stripping a floor is to ensure that all necessary old and worn sealer is removed; once removed your travertine tiles can be resealed.

You will know it's time to have your travertine floors stripped, cleaned and sealed once they begin to appear dull or "matte" even after you have given them an efficient regular clean. If you notice that your travertine tiles are staining easily, it's a good indication that your previous sealer is wearing off and your travertine floors will need to be resealed immediately to prevent permanent staining.

Yes, our tile cleaning services are safe! Tile Cleaners® generally use only the highest quality water based products alongside our state of the art cleaning machinery to provide the best cleaning solution without compromising your travertine tiles. Stone tiles are porous and require more attention than man made tiles, which is why its extremely important to use the correct products and equipment necessary to bring your travertine tiles back to their best possible condition. Tile Cleaners® prides itself on specifically catering for each tile variety.

Tile Cleaners® prefer to use high quality non-solvent based stripping and sealing products. These products are not messy and won't damage your travertine tiles or anything else in your home. Current non-solvent based strippers and techniques are more than adequate. Tile Cleaners® technicians can apply solvent based strippers in very specific circumstances, however this requires leaving the premises for up to 48 hours and a very high level of safety and protection.

Here at Tile Cleaners® we understand the importance of your family's safety, which is why Tile Cleaners® prefer to use non-toxic finishing agents as we not only want to protect your travertine floors, but your families health too. Materials and agents that present potential health hazards are not in our product portfolio and never have been.

If you want your travertine floors to be their cleanest and looking their very best you need to have a professional remove as much of the old sealer as possible. Once this is done the cleaning process will be carried out and the sealer applied. You will have the freshest and cleanest possible travertine floors once we are finished with the process.

Travertine tiles stripping and sealing is simply the process of stripping the coating off the travertine floor before resealing it. Travertine flooring can look dull and lifeless over time, making it look older and really bringing down the feel of the home. By stripping and resealing, you can bring back the beautiful, lustrous appearance of your travertine and eliminate the cost of laying new flooring.

Our professional team will go through the job processes with you step by step so you know exactly what you're getting. The process includes stripping any previous sealer if it was applied, the travertine is then thoroughly cleaned and neutralised so that it is free of dust, residue and anything else that can affect the new sealer. A new sealer is applied to the dry travertine floor and allowed to set. The newly sealed travertine floor will not only look new again, it will be protected and result in your travertine becoming easier to maintain.

It depends on the type of sealer used and the amount of foot traffic the travertine tiles are being exposed to. Australia's Deepshield® range of deep impregnating water based sealer's, offer long term benefits with Deepshield Gold® lasting up to 15 years. Topical sealer's have a life expectancy of around 3 years. If you have a high amount of foot traffic or perhaps severe weather conditions(for outdoor tiles), you may experience a shorter lifetime. Sealing your travertine tiles can also depend on the tiles condition. Once they start showing patchy areas and are staining easily then you should have them resealed. Give us a call and we can assist you with all your enquiries.

Travertine floors can damage easily, any oily or harsh spills can damage the travertine tiles and penetrate the pores leaving a permanent stain, unreachable by domestic cleaning methods. We strongly recommend sealing you travertine tiles to keep their natural look and feel, to protect them against permanent staining and to prevent any future accidental damage. They will look their very best for longer and will be easier and more convenient to maintain.

The best time to have your travertine tiles sealed is immediately after installation to prevent any accidental staining or damage. You will know that your travertine tiles need sealing once you start noticing patchy sealed areas of the floor and/or your travertine tiles are staining easier.

Efflorescence is a problem that travertine and most porous tiles can face. It's the tendency of the water in the travertine to bring salts from the stone to the surface as it evaporates. The water evaporates leaving the salts on the surface resulting in a whitish coating and ruining its finish. The only way to avoid this problem is to seal your travertine tiles with one of our highest quality water resistant sealer's and to stop the source of the water that is penetrating the tiles, for example a water pipe leak or damaged grout.

Yes we can. Efflorescence is a build up of salts and can be removed with efflorescence removers and other specialised cleaning techniques. Efflorescence is typically caused by a leakage behind the travertine tiles or through damaged grout lines. The efflorescence can be removed but it is important the cause of the efflorescence is resoled.

To keep your travertine tiles and grout looking new, Tile Cleaners® recommend cleaning each week with a mild detergent to remove any dirt or grime from the travertine surface. Strong detergents(strong acid or alkali) may affect the sealer, mild detergents and pH neutral substances are strongly recommended.

Tile Cleaners® charge per square meter for each separate room. There is a price list on the Tile Cleaners® website for you to review. Before we begin our work we will measure each room individually, confirm the work to be carried out as well as confirm all costs with you.

We recommend that you measure each Travertine area separately. The simplest way to measure is by multiplying the width by the length. For example a room that is 3 meters long and 2 meters wide is 3 X 2 = 6m2 in total.

Tile Cleaners® technicians can help to move items that one person could be expected to move such as furniture with wheels, light furniture, tables and chairs, however as Tile Cleaners® insurance covers our restoration services, we will not be held liable for any damage caused to furniture or property you request our technicians to move.
