Testimonials

We got our tiles more than 25 years ago. We were told that we had a solvent sealer on our tiles, which apparently most companies wouldn't be able to strip off. However we rang a couple of places to check them out. No luck. A friend of mine recommended Tile Cleaners. We rang the guys and they agreed to have a look the next day. We decided to go ahead with the job after getting a satisfactory quote. Tile Cleaners team stripped and resealed our old tiles. We are very grateful for your help guys. Thank you again.

Olivia and Andrew Clark, Hornsby, NSW

When I moved into my new house, I was shocked by how dirty and old the tiles in the entire house looked. I wasn't sure if they were supposed to be like that or if they were just really dirty. I decided to call Tile Cleaners and ask them to have a look and tell me what I could do to improve the look of my tiles. Tile Cleaners ® came the same weekend and managed to make my tiles look brand new. They also informed me that the sealer would protect my tiles for years to come. Amazing! Thank you guys! My floor looks gorgeous.

Amanda Burtender, Brighton East, VIC

I was about to sell my business and wanted to clean and reseal my vinyl floors to improve the looks of them before having people over for inspection of the property. I did a booking with another company but was horrified when I realized that my floor was back to its horrible look in less than two weeks. I carefully looked up other cleaning companies, scared that I would chose the wrong cleaning company. A friend of mine recommended Tile Cleaners, but after what happened to my floor last time I got it cleaned I was really skeptic, but gave it a go. All I can say is thank you guys so much for a quick response and a good job. I sold the office and left your contact details with the new owner for future cleaning.

All porous tiles should be sealed, sealing your tiles will help prevent & reduce staining. Sealing will keep most stains suspended at the surface of your travertine creating a barrier that provides protection against chemical attack, deterioration and contamination. Sealing is the first important step towards protecting your natural travertine against stains.

Travertine Tile Travertine flooring is a very stylish material that is functional and aesthetically attractive while bringing a very appealing, old-world character to any home or business. Travertine pavers are especially attractive around the swimming pool and surrounds with no two tiles looking the same. Travertine will often appear fibrous or concentric and can come in a white, tan or a cream like colour.

Travertine is formed in mineral springs, especially around hot springs, underground rivers and in limestone caves. Travertine is different to limestone(sedimentary) and marble(metamorphic) with the main characteristic of travertine being the holes within the stone created as a result of gases escaping as the travertine is formed. The resulting stone is a smooth and very hard substance further characterised by its porous surface.

Extensive deposits of travertine exist at Tivoli, near Rome, which is where the stone receives its name. Tivoli was known as Tibur in ancient Roman times. The ancient name for the stone was lapis tiburtinus meaning tibur stone, which has evolved to travertine.

By the time travertine is quarried it is naturally beautiful - a smooth, dense stone that exhibits a notable creamy colour that evokes a certain old-world refinement.

Different cleaning and maintenance methods should be used on travertine depending on its finish and whether it's sealed or left in its natural state. In general, Travertine tiles should be cleaned and maintained with non acidic products, and it is recommended to have travertine professionally cleaned every few years to maintain their appearance and restore the fresh look once the tiles start to appear tired following regular daily use.

Travertine, like other calcareous stones, is referred to as acid sensitive. Calcareous stones are readily dissolved in acid, therefore acidic products should not be used on Travertine tiles

Sealing Travertine Tiles

Sealants are layer forming treatments that produce a shiny(or natural) protective film on the surface. This sealer must be stripped and re applied from time to time. Different sealants are recommended for indoors than outdoors and sealants can vary in type, lifetime(durability), stain protective properties, and slip resisting properties. Tile Cleaners® seal your travertine tiles with one of our highest quality water based products.

Tile Cleaners® are proud to be accredited applicators of Australian Deepshield™, an advanced deep penetrating range of sealers engineered using nano-technology. Sealant technology has recently taken a giant step forward and Deepshield™ ensures unmatched protection and reliability for all natural surfaces. Deepshield™ offers long term benefits and peace of mind. Whether you decide to seal your natural travertine tiles using a Clear Impregnating Penetrating Sealer, a Colour Enhancing Penetrating Sealer that enriches the colour and texture of your stone or a high quality Topical Gloss/Satin/Matte Finish Sealer, with Tile Cleaners® you can rest assured your travertine tiles are receiving the best possible protection and care.

deepshield Travertine

Two main sealing options exist for travertine tiles

  • Deep Penetrating Impregnating Sealer
  • (Transparent Finish/Colour Enhancing Finish)

  • Topical Sealer
  • (Gloss/Satin/Matte Finish)

A deep penetrating impregnating sealer protects travertine and grout from water and oil based stains by chemically reacting with the surface pores using nano-technology to create a breathable protective barrier. An impregnating sealer protects the travertine surface and grout from absorbing stains while also resulting in cleaning and maintenance becoming much easier. Australia's Deepshield™ range of impregnating water based sealers last for up to 10 years while Deepshield™ Gold, based on the latest fluoro-bond technology lasts for up to 15 years. A penetrating impregnating transparent sealer enters the pores of your stone and once cured will not change the look of the stone. A penetrating colour enhancing sealer is designed to enhance and enrich the natural look of stone surfaces.

Tile Cleaners® technicians are experts at applying all types of sealer and will ensure your travertine looks its absolute best. Tile Cleaners® can apply a topical sealer when especially required to create a high gloss, satin sheen or matte finish to your surfaces. Topical sealer is also helpful in situations where the old solvent based sealer can not be completely removed from your travertine or when required to hide certain types of damage. Topical sealer's have a life expectancy of around 3 years.

You can easily test how porous your natural travertine is by applying a drop of water to the surface and watching how the water is absorbed. You can then see how any type of water based stain is absorbed by the travertine tile surface and grout.

Types of sealer's used on travertine tiles

Water based sealer's and solvent-based sealer's can both be used on travertine, however unless absolutely required for a specific reason, we always recommend applying a water based sealer that doesn't produce harmful fumes during application and removal. Water based sealers are easier to apply and remove and also require less drying time. One of the most popular product ranges available is Australian made Deepshield™ quality impregnating water based sealer's that prolong the life of your surfaces by taking full advantage of recent advancements in nano technology, providing unmatched long-term stain resistance and reliability.

It is important to ensure the correct water based sealer is applied to your travertine tile which will also depend on whether they are indoors or outdoors as most sealer's will not last long outside due to being designed for internal use. If your travertine is outdoors, it is important to use a water based sealer that is specifically designed for outdoor travertine.

There are two types of impregnating clear sealer, water based sealer & solvent based. In the past solvent based sealers were more widely used as they used to absorb deeper into the travertine and grout and would also last longer. Today however, thanks to new technological advancements, it is recommended only to use water based sealers, that last much longer and cause less potential damage to health and property.

deepshield surface

Solvent based products are more difficult to apply and can create major problems when applied incorrectly as they are very hard to remove. Tile Cleaners® recommend our clients apply a long lasting water based sealer to their travertine tiles and grout. Topical sealer's (glossy plastic coating over the top of the travertine) are still used on travertine, but these older style sealers can trap moisture in the stone and make the surface slippery when wet. When a topical sealer wears in higher traffic areas, the entire surface usually needs to be stripped and re-sealed.

It is very important to ensure that tiles achieve their cleanest possible condition prior to being sealed. This will protect the appearance of the tile, and importantly ensure that there won't be any dirt, stains or other debris caught under the layer of sealant.

To provide the best possible protection from oil and water-based stains; to maintain the look and slip resistance of your travertine and to prevent damaging moisture from being trapped within the stone, it is recommended to seal your travertine with a high quality, invisible, fully breathable impregnating sealer.

Stripping Travertine Tiles

When your travertine tiles begin to appear dull and start to stain easily, that usually means your previous sealer is wearing off and your travertine tiles are in danger of permanent damage. Tile Cleaners® strip/remove all necessary old sealer from your travertine tiles, restoring their natural fresh look using our state of the art cleaning machinery.

As Travertine tiles can be sealed, previous sealer may need to be removed and re-applied after it starts to wear off, this usually depends on the type of sealer used, method used during application and the amount of traffic or use. This process is called stripping and sealing, and is usually required every 2-10 years.

No matter where your travertine tiles are, Tile Cleaners® will strip, clean and professionally reseal them for you. In your kitchen, shower, bathroom, around the swimming pool, your backyard, outdoors or any hard to reach indoor areas.

Frequently Asked Questions

A sealer is a liquid, or carrier containing a resin that is applied to porous natural stone or porous man made surfaces that helps prevent staining from water and/or oil based materials as well as help to achieve better results when cleaning your surfaces.

Sealers are different from polishes and are actually designed to keep liquids and dirt particles from sinking into the natural stone. It is extremely important to have your travertine tiles sealed. All travertine tiles should be sealed when they are first installed; this initial seal can last up to 15 years. It is important to call us as soon as your travertine floors are installed so we can protect them before any accidental permanent damage occurs.

The best sealer to use for travertine pavers around the pool is our high quality Impregnating Penetrating Water Based Sealer that protects your stone to the core and eliminates the slipperiness factor other sealers can create with travertine pavers.

Tile Cleaners® advise the simple "water test". The water test is well known in the stone industry and it will help you determine whether your travertine floors require sealing. First you need to place a few drops of water on your stone and let it set for around 10 to 30 minutes then wipe it dry. If your stone did not darken, it means your travertine is perfectly sealed and does not require sealing, but if it has darkened, it means that the water was able to penetrate your stone and sealing is required.

All of our sealing products are water based, we do not apply solvent- based sealer except in certain cases where it is the only option. The sealer will not affect the texture of your travertine tiles in any way; however, it will protect your travertine from staining and maintain that lustrous, natural finish you are looking for.

Yes we do. Colour enhancer is a compound designed to enrich the natural look of travertine tiles. It darkens and enhances the colour of your tiles and brings out the natural beauty in your travertine, giving a slight wet look/low sheen.

Tile Cleaners® colours enhancer will not affect the texture of your travertine floors, however, it will enhance the colours of your travertine tiles and bring ut the natural beauty of your surfaces.

Our professional team will go through the job processes with you step by step so you know exactly what you're getting. The process includes stripping any previous sealer if it was applied, the travertine is then thoroughly cleaned and neutralised so that it is free of dust, residue and anything else that can affect the new sealer. A new sealer is applied to the dry travertine floor and allowed to set. The newly sealed travertine floor will not only look new again, it will be protected and result in your travertine becoming easier to maintain.

It all depends on the size of the area that we are sealing but most jobs take 4 - 8 hours to complete. We do cleaning and resealing in the same day so you don't have to fuss with more than one appointment.

It takes 4 hours to be touch dry and normally 24 hours for the sealer to fully cure, which is when you can put everything back into place. Nothing hard such as furniture can be moved on to the tiles and grout for at least 24 hours.

Tile Cleaners® apply two main types of high quality sealer, deep penetrating sealer and topical sealer. Topical Sealer has lifetime expectancy of around 3 years and Australia's Deepshield™ range of impregnating water based sealer's last for up to 10 years while Deepshield™ Gold based on the latest fluoro-bond technology can last for up to 15 years dependent on usage and weather conditions.

Deepshield™ Impregnating Penetrating Sealer does not alter the slipperiness of your travertine tiles' surface as the sealer penetrates the top layer of your travertine. Topical Sealer may result in your travertine floors becoming slippery when wet. To maintain the look and slip resistance of your travertine and to prevent damaging moisture from being trapped within the stone, it is recommended to seal your surfaces with a high quality, invisible, fully breathable impregnating sealer.

Any acidic substance is harmful for your travertine tiles, they can be etched(eaten/corroded) easily and sealing against acid attack is very difficult. The best way to protect your travertine tiles from acid attack is to seal and clean spills immediately. The high porosity of stone based tiles makes sealing a must in order to provide protection against future acid attack and liquid spillage.

Tile Cleaners® colour enhancing sealer may help hide those nasty scratches you have, but we cannot guarantee that they return to their original condition. Deepshield™ Penetrating Colour Enhancing Sealer darkens your travertine tiles by up to 20% and can help camouflage etches, restoring the natural, new look of your travertine floors.

To keep your travertine tiles and grout looking new, Tile Cleaners® recommend cleaning each week with a mild detergent to remove any dirt or grime from the travertine surface. Strong detergents(strong acid or alkali) may affect the sealer, mild detergents and pH neutral substances are strongly recommended. Our best advice to protect your travertine tiles is to seal them with one of our highest quality sealers. This is the best protection your travertine tiles can receive against staining.

Tile Cleaners® charge per square meter for each separate travertine room. There is a price list on the Tile Cleaners® website for you to review. Before we begin our work we will measure each room individually, confirm the work to be carried out as well as confirm all costs with you.

We recommend that you measure each travertine area separately. The simplest way to measure is by multiplying the width by the length. For example a room that is 3 meters long and 2 meters wide is 3 X 2 = 6m2 in total.
