Testimonials

I was about to sell my house, but was not happy with the tiles in the dining area. The tiles were white and shiny but the grout looked really dark and dirty. I already had a potential client; however the dark grout ruined the beauty of the room. I didn't have much time to fix the grout and decided to call Tile Cleaners as my real estate agency mentioned them. As my real estate agent said, Tile cleaners responded really quickly. They also pointed out that some of the grout was coming off in the hallway when they were there, which I had not even noticed. Thank you for fixing my problem so quickly. The house is sold now and I left your details with the new owner so they can keep the tiles in good condition.

My mother's tiles were old and ugly, as she has been living in the same house her entire life without ever really taking care of her tiles. I called Tile Cleaners to get advice on what to do with them. They came to her house the next day to have a look at my mum's tiles. I am very satisfied with how patient and highly professional you were with my mother. I am sorry I couldn't be there when you arrived, and I am really impressed by how you managed to explain everything to my mom and help her out. Thank you for doing a great job.

Angela Coopers, Concord, NSW

We got our tiles more than 25 years ago. We were told that we had a solvent sealer on our tiles, which apparently most companies wouldn't be able to strip off. However we rang a couple of places to check them out. No luck. A friend of mine recommended Tile Cleaners. We rang the guys and they agreed to have a look the next day. We decided to go ahead with the job after getting a satisfactory quote. Tile Cleaners team stripped and resealed our old tiles. We are very grateful for your help guys. Thank you again.

Porcelain Tiles

Our services including restoring all types of porcelain tiled floors and grout across Sydney.

Porcelain is a type of man-made tile that is actually grouped under the heading of ceramic tiles. Both are fired at high temperatures but their difference comes when you look at the porosity and hardness rating of the tiles.

Defining Porcelain Tiles

The name porcelain, originated from 'porcellana' meaning cowrie shell in Old Italian. Like ceramic it is created from raw components and fired in a kiln at temperatures of up to 1400 degrees. The difference of porcelain tiles to ceramic is due to the glass and mineral within the fired body giving a higher density finish to the tile.

Types of Porcelain Tiles

You will notice different varieties of porcelain on the market including:

  • Natural Porcelain Tile – Tiles remain in their most natural condition without polish or glaze. They maintain their porous finish.
  • Polished Porcelain Tile – The finish is smooth yet is not glazed and hence still require sealing. A large majority of polished porcelain nowadays will come pre-sealed from the manufacturer saving you the sealing stage. Tile Cleaners ® Sydney recommend a professional clean and polish when newly laid to bring the tiles up and provide a showroom finish.
  • Glazed Porcelain Tile – A great option for maintenance purposes as it resists stains and moisture better than the other types. This smooth finish can cause problems in wet areas and kitchens as they can become slippery.

Is there a difference between a Ceramic tile and a Porcelain tile?

Tiles that have a clay base and are fired in a kiln generally fall under the man made ceramic category. When choosing to invest in new floor tiles it is beneficial to know the positives and negatives to both of these popular options.

  • Scratch resistance - The density of a porcelain tile body is higher making it more scratch resistant than a ceramic tile. In the final stages of creation porcelain is fired at a higher temperature that ends in a more durable product.
  • Water resistance - Porcelain tile has an absorption rate of 0.5%, less than that of a ceramic tile.
  • >Maintenance - Glazed porcelain tile maintenance is as simple as a quick sweep and a mop when necessary, however if your choice of tile is natural or polished porcelain, be sure that your floor is properly sealed otherwise cleaning could get more difficult. >Colour - Generally ceramic tiles obtain their colour by having a glass baked to the top of the tile whereas porcelain colour will run through the entire tile itself giving it its 'Full body' title.
  • Where it can be used - Porcelain tiles with their high durability make them more versatile to be laid indoors or out. Laying ceramic outside is not an option particularly in colder locations as they will most likely crack. You can certainly lay porcelain outside but stone is a better option.
  • >Durability - Porcelain is better suited to high traffic areas because of its dense composition. It is fired at higher temperature for longer and has a higher feldspar (rock mineral) content. Also if chipping or scuffing does occur it is much less noticeable, even invisible as the colour runs through the entire tile, unlike ceramics surface colour. In terms of cleaning, porcelain is able to be cleaned at a higher pressure and hence will achieve a better result generally from professional cleaning.
  • Cost - Ceramic will most likely always be cheaper. But when choosing to purchase a floor tile it is worth considering the factors previously mentioned not just pricing.

Caring for your Porcelain Tiles

Porcelain has many features but most its most notable is the minimal effort required to keep it clean. Beauty and effortless maintenance combine with a porcelain tile meaning you don't have to settle for one or the other. It will hold through everyday wear and tear in high traffic areas like kitchens and bathrooms. If cared for properly from the beginning it will be fairly resistant to moisture and staining alike. Below are a few simple steps to follow in caring for your porcelain:

  • Regularly sweep over your tiles to stop gathering dirt in the grout lines.
  • Wiping over grout lines with a damp soapy cloth will make sure dirt doesn't clay to the grout.
  • Don't forget about the walls they will hold scum and grime as much as floors. Regularly wash them down.
  • In wet areas like bathrooms keep the tiles and grout as dry as possible. A quick towel down after use will save unsightly mould and mildew from growing.
  • Sealing the grout between your tiles is important to keep it looking clean.
  • Always seal the grout lines to repel moisture and stains and allow for easier maintenance.
