What is Terracotta?

Terracotta is a ceramic material that has been used for building construction and decorative arts since ancient times in cultures around the world. Terracotta, which literally means "baked earth," is made from natural clay, which gives it a characteristic reddish-brown color. The color varies slightly depending on the clay used. Terracotta is hard-baked, brownish red earthen ware, often glazed and colored may be glazed for extra durability or to provide color. Usually hand-made and varies in color, texture and appearance. The colors range from natural earthtones such as gray and brownish yellow to various shades of red. It is a waterproof and very sturdy material.

When used indoors, terra cotta tile floors can be left raw, but more often, terra cotta is finished with a top coat sealer. Some terra-cotta tiles are purported to be waterproof. To the contrary, all raw clay tiles are like sponges when it comes to soaking up water.

Terracotta may come prefinished or require application of various types of sealers or coatings on site to provide a wearing surface. May crumble or show wear quickly unless sealed and laid on water proof layer. Terra Cotta should never be installed in a high-traffic area, and should never be cleaned at pressures above 1100 PSI and then only if the grout is in good condition.

Sealing Terracotta Tiles

Terra cotta tiles are beautiful, and they lend an informal and somewhat rustic or even southwestern air to residential floors. As a raw product, it is always recommended that this type of flooring be sealed after installation. A professional tile cleaner having a thorough knowledge of the different sealers available as well as their application instructions should be used.

If you've chosen terracotta, it's likely that you're looking for an old looking rustic design, so a natural old sealant will be the way to go.

Frequently Asked Questions

A sealer is a liquid, or carrier containing a specially created resin that is applied to porous natural stone or man made surfaces that helps prevent staining from water and/or oil based materials. Sealing will also ensure better results when cleaning and maintaining your surfaces.

Sealers are different from polishes and are actually designed to keep liquids and dirt particles from sinking into your terracotta surfaces. It is extremely important to have your terracotta sealed. All terracotta tiles should be sealed after installation; this initial seal can last up to 15 years depending on the quality of sealer used and the level of regular wear and exposure. It is important to call us as soon your terracotta tiles are installed so we can protect them before any accidental damage occurs.

You will know it's time to have your terracotta floors stripped, cleaned and re/sealed once they begin to appear dull or "matte" even after you have given them an efficient regular clean. If you notice that your terracotta tiles are staining easily, it's a good indication that your previous sealer is wearing off and your terracotta floors will need to be resealed immediately to prevent permanent staining.

All of our sealing products are water based, we do not apply solvent- based sealer except in certain cases where it is the only option. The sealer will not affect the texture of your terracotta tiles in any way; however, it will protect your terracotta from staining and help maintain that lustrous finish you are looking for.

Yes we do. Colour enhancer is a compound designed to enrich the natural look of terracotta tiles. It darkens and enhances the colour of your tiles and brings out the natural beauty in your terracotta.

Our professional team will go through the job processes with you step by step so you know exactly what you're getting. The process includes stripping any previous sealer if it was applied, the terracotta is then thoroughly cleaned and neutralised so that it is free of dust, residue and anything else that can affect the new sealer. A new sealer is applied to the dry terracotta and allowed to set. The newly sealed terracotta will not only look new again, it will be protected and result in your terracotta becoming easier to maintain.

It all depends on the size of the area that we are sealing however most jobs require 4 - 8 hours to complete. We perform the cleaning and resealing in the same day so you don't have to fuss with more than one appointment.

It takes 4 hours for penetrating sealers to be touch dry and 24 hours for the sealer to fully cure which is when you can put everything back into place. Nothing hard such as furniture can be moved on to the tiles and grout and the surfaces should not become wet for at least 24 hours. Topical sealers usually require around 48 hours to fully cure.

Tile Cleaners® apply two main types of high quality sealer, deep penetrating sealer and topical sealer. Topical Sealer has a lifetime expectancy of around 3 years and Australia's Deepshield™ range of impregnating water based sealer's last for up to 10 years while Deepshield™ Gold based on the latest fluoro-bond technology can last for up to 15 years, dependent on usage and weather conditions.

Deepshield™ Impregnating Penetrating Sealer does not alter the slipperiness of your terracotta tiles' surface as the sealer penetrates the top layer (surface pores) of your terracotta. Topical Sealer may result in your terracotta floors becoming slippery when wet. To maintain the look and slip resistance of your terracotta and to prevent damaging moisture from being trapped within the stone, it is recommended to seal your surfaces with a high quality, invisible, fully breathable impregnating sealer.

To keep your terracotta tiles and grout looking new, Tile Cleaners® recommend cleaning each week with a mild detergent to remove any dirt or grime. Strong detergents (strong acid or alkali) may affect the sealer, mild detergents and pH neutral substances are strongly recommended. Our best advice to protect your terracotta tiles is to seal them with one of our highest quality sealers. This is the best protection your terracotta tiles can receive against staining.

Tile Cleaners® charge per square meter for each separate room. There is a price list on the Tile Cleaners® website for you to review. Before we begin our work we will measure each room individually, confirm the work to be carried out as well as confirm all costs with you.

We recommend that you measure each terracotta area separately. The simplest way to measure is by multiplying the width by the length. For example a room that is 3 meters long and 2 meters wide is 3 X 2 = 6m2 in total.

Tile Cleaners® technicians can help to move items that one person could be expected to move such as furniture with wheels, light furniture, tables and chairs, however as Tile Cleaners® insurance covers our restoration services, we will not be held liable for any damage caused to furniture or property you request our technicians to move.

Move all furniture and items off the floor so it is ready for when we arrive.
