Testimonials

I have several different freshly laid tiles in my new house. All pathways have stone tiles and there are marble tiles in the bathrooms and porcelain in the kitchen. I needed to get them sealed and was not sure if it was possible to seal them all. I contacted Tile Cleaners because my dad recommended them. He had a similar situation in his house and was very happy with the job Tile Cleaners had done. I was very worried about my tiles since they were brand new and very expensive. Tile Cleaners team were very patient with me, explaining how they were going to apply the sealer on different types of tiles, what sealer they would use, how long it would last for and advised me on how to take care of my tiles. I called Tile Cleaners a few times confirming details, asking for prices, making sure they could to the job during the weekend etc. The guys were amazingly patient and helpful. When I had gathered all the information I wanted, I was ready to go ahead. The work done by Tile Cleaners actually took less time than what it took me looking for information about it. Sorry for the pain I caused, and again thank you.

I just got new tiles laid in my house that were very expensive. I needed to get them sealed but couldn't afford to pay much for it. On the other hand I didn't want to go for a company offering cheap and unreliably services. My boss recommended Tile Cleaners, saying that the company's prices were reasonable and that they offered quality service when he used them. I contacted them and ended up doing a booking with them. It is very pleasant to know that there are companies out there who actually care about providing very high quality services for affordable prices. I gave your contacts to my sister. Thank you for the job you did

I noticed that some of the tiles in my bathroom walls were loose and the grout was coming off. I am a very busy so kept on postponing calling someone to fix it. One day I got home and the loose tiles were lying broken on the floor. Can you imagine my frustration? I rang my brother in panic and he gave me Tile Cleaners' contact details. I rang them straight away. The guys told me I needed a tiler and professional regrouting work done so I thought it would take ages to fix my problem. However they organized the work very well. I had my tiles fixed on Friday night the same week and the entire bathroom regrouted on Saturday. Thank you some much for your quick help; it was such a relief.

sandstone paving slabs sandblasted Restoration

Sandstone is a sedimentary rock composed of sand-sized minerals or rock grains. Most sandstone is composed of quartz and/or feldspar, one of the most common minerals in the Earth's crust as well as calcite, gypsum or various iron compounds. Like sand, sandstone has a granular texture and may be found in almost any colour, but the most common colours are tan, brown, yellow, red, grey, pink, and white. Since sandstone beds often form highly visible cliffs and other topographic features, certain colours of sandstone have been strongly identified with certain regions.

Sandstone Tile Restoration

Sandstone tiles vary in porosity and hardness however they are soft and porous on the other hand. Since Sandstone tiles can absorb water very fast, it is important to follow proper Sandstone tile restoration methods in every opportunity to ensure proper maintenance.

Sandstone floors can be prone to scratching, staining and fracturing. The tiles should also be allowed to breath instead of being covered by synthetic sealers or urethane. Tile Cleaners® offer the best solution to protect your sandstone using highly penetrating impregnating water based sealers, creating a barrier that provides protection against chemical attack, deterioration and contamination.

The primary cause for sandstone floors becoming dull and lacklustre is foot traffic. Prolonged use will grind and pack in dust, sand and grit. Although the scratching that occurs is very fine, it eventually covers the majority of the surface and over time dulls the finish to the point where it loses its reflective properties. To make your stone surfaces smooth and reflective, we employ the use of high speed polishers.

Many older buildings have durable sandstone flooring, the chalky porous type with a smooth granular surface typical of most French and Spanish sandstone. This variety does stain easier than marble, varies in hardness and does become etched by acids including soft drink, as well as absorb oils and other liquids. Common colours are black, grey, white, yellow and brown. Sandstone should be sealed with a penetrating sealer to prevent staining and reduce soiling and should only be cleaned with neutral pH detergents. Because it is soft, sandstone should never be cleaned at pressures above 800 PSI and then only if the grout is in good condition.

Sandstone Paving Grey Restoration Professional regular maintenance will be required to maintain the honed or polished appearance of sandstone. Sandstone looks best with a honed or low/medium sheen appearance however some people insist on a high shine finish. Some low calcite Sandstone can be extremely difficult to polish and therefore vitrification would be required, vitrification however can give the stone an unnatural plastic appearance if repeated too often.

Sandstone Tile Restoration Before & After

Sandstone can be highly porous - although porosity will vary from piece to piece a tablespoon of water on a sandstone surface will be absorbed in seconds. Porosity is also affected by the finish - highly polished sandstone is a little harder to penetrate than surfaces with a honed(matte) finish.

To provide the best possible protection from oil and water-based stains; to maintain the look and slip resistance of your sandstone and to prevent damaging moisture from being trapped within the stone, it is recommended to seal your sandstone with a high quality, invisible, fully breathable impregnating sealer.

Sandstone's calcite composition makes it susceptible to acid attack from spilt food and drink. Its high porosity can also mean oil will permeate the surface and leave stains when not properly sealed with a penetrating/impregnating sealer. Sandstone's calcite composition makes it susceptible to acid attack from spilt food and drink. Its high porosity can also mean oil will permeate the surface and leave staining if it is not properly sealed with a penetrating / impregnating sealer.

Sealing your sandstone will keep most stains suspended at the surface, sealing is the first important step towards protecting your sandstone against stains.

Two main sealing options exist for sandstone tiles

  • Deep Penetrating Impregnating Sealer
  • (Transparent Finish/Colour Enhancing Finish)

  • Topical Sealer
  • (Gloss/Satin/Matte Finish)

deepshield surface

A deep penetrating impregnating sealer protects sandstone and grout from water and oil based stains by chemically reacting with the surface pores using nano-technology, creating a breathable protective barrier. An impregnating sealer protects the sandstone surface and grout from absorbing stains while also resulting in cleaning and maintenance becoming much easier. Australia's Deepshield™ range of impregnating water based sealer's, offer long term benefits lasting for up to 10 years while Deepshield™ Gold, based on the latest fluoro-bond technology lasts for up to 15 years.

A penetrating impregnating transparent sealer enters the pore structure of your sandstone and once cured, will not change the look of the tile or stone whereas a penetrating colour enhancing sealer is designed to enhance and enrich the natural look of stone surfaces.

Tile Cleaners® technicians are the experts at applying all types of sealer and will ensure your sandstone looks its absolute best. Our technicians can apply a topical sealer when especially required to create a high gloss, satin sheen or matte finish to your surfaces. Topical sealer is also helpful in situations where your old solvent based sealer can not be completely removed or when required to hide certain types of damage. Topical sealer's usually have a life expectancy of around 3 years.

Pre-Sealing Preparation

  • Any surface to be sealed should be clean and looking just as you want it before it is sealed - it may be impossible to remove stains after sealing without once again having to strip the sealer. Acidic cleaners should not be used on sandstone as they will cause damage.
  • Sandstone must have no other coating such as wax or a topical sealer before it's sealed, so any such coating must be removed before sealing.
  • Floor must be thoroughly dry before applying any sealer.

Protection from Acid Etching

It is very difficult to seal Sandstone against acid attack.
It is very difficult to seal sandstone against acid attack. Sandstone and other calcite based stone such as marble and travertine are prone to acid etching. Sandstone is immediately 'etched' (eaten/corroded) by any acidic material on contact - including lemon juice, cola, wine and champagne. For this reason the honed(matte) look is popular, as it doesn't show etch marks as much as polished

Sandstone Floor Care & Maintenance

Sandstone can be difficult to maintain if a proper maintenance cycle is not put in place from the point of installation. As it is usually not polished, the problem of scratching is not as big an issue as it is with marble, however if proper barrier matting is not introduced even a honed surface will lose its attractiveness. The most important factor to consider with the maintenance of sandstone is the possibility of staining.

Sandstone Stripping

Stripping, scrubbing and cleaning to remove old sealant and its residue, restoring the original appearance of the floor. Our technicians are equipped with all necessary equipment and possess all skills and experience needed to provide your sandstone tiles with an extensive floor stripping service. We can strip and reseal any hard surface flooring as well as wall tiles.

Sandstone Grinding

Grinding will smooth out imperfections and open a new layer upon which it is possible to build a high quality honed or polished finish. Grinding will remove deep scratches, stains and other contaminations from your sandstone, resulting in a very smooth and even surface. Grinding will also remove any lippage, the term used for uneven tiles which can occur after a typical installation.

Sandstone Honing

Honed sandstone surfaces have a more satin-feel, smooth and velvety to the touch often more suited to casual, comfortable environments than more formal polished surfaces. Honing your floors is a fantastic way to virtually eliminate taxing maintenance requirements while still having the wonderful characteristic of beautiful stone surfaces in your home or business.

Sandstone Polishing

Polishing is achieved by using very fine grade abrasive diamond discs until a reflective finish is achieved. These final grades reduce scratches which are not even visible to the human eye allowing the natural crystals on the surface to reflect light more effectively. Highly polished floors have much smaller pores to collect soil, dirt and grime, ensuring maintenance is made a lot easier.

Efflorescence Treatment

Efflorescence is the formation of salt deposits on or near the surface of the tile and grout. Tile Cleaners® technicians have a variety of equipment for the effective removal of efflorescence. We also carry all the required treatments, agitation tools as well as chemical solutions to safely and effectively removed efflorescence deposits internally and externally.

Frequently Asked Questions

You will know it's time to have your Sandstone tiles professionally cleaned and restored once your Sandstone floors start looking dull and matte, even after you have given them an efficient domestic clean. Yes, our sandstone tile cleaning services are safe! At Tile Cleaners ® we use only the best water based products alongside our state of the art cleaning machinery to provide the best cleaning solutions at no compromise to your sandstone tiles condition. Stone based tiles are usually more porous and require a lot more attention than regular man made tiles, that's why its extremely important to use the right products and equipment necessary for bringing your sandstone tiles back to their best possible condition. Tile Cleaners® prides itself for catering for each tile type.

Here at Tile Cleaners® we understand the importance of your family's safety. This is why Tile Cleaners® prefer to use non-toxic finishing agents as we not only want to protect your sandstone floors, but your families health too. Materials and agents that present potential health hazards are not in our product portfolio and never have been.

To keep your sandstone tiles and grout looking new, Tile Cleaners® recommend cleaning each week with a damp microfibre cloth and a mild detergent to remove any dirt or grime from the tiled surface. Any strong detergents (any strong acid or alkali) may affect the sealer, mild detergents and pH neutral substances are strongly recommended. Our best advice to protect your sandstone tiles is to seal them with one of our highest quality sealers. This is the best protection you sandstone tiles can have against staining.

If the stain is new and has not set in well, we will probably be able to remove it. However, we cannot guarantee that we will remove it completely; we can only guarantee cleaning it back to its best possible condition. This also depends on whether the sandstone tiles have been sealed previously or not. Some stains might penetrate the natural stone and settle in below the surface and can be hard to clean out. It is important to have us strip, clean and seal your sandstone floor so in the future nothing will be able to stain your sandstone floors.

Tile Cleaners® charge per square meter for each separate room. There is a price list on the Tile Cleaners® website for you to review. Before we begin our work we will measure each room individually, confirm the work to be carried out as well as confirm all costs with you.

We recommend that you measure each sandstone area separately. The simplest way to measure is by multiplying the width by the length. For example a room that is 3 meters long and 2 meters wide is 3 X 2 = 6m2 in total.

Tile Cleaners® technicians can help to move items that one person could be expected to move such as furniture with wheels, light furniture, tables and chairs, however as Tile Cleaners® insurance covers our restoration services, we will not be held liable for any damage caused to furniture or property you request our technicians to move.

Move all furniture and items up off the floor so it is ready for us to clean when we arrive.
