We got our tiles more than 25 years ago. We were told that we had a solvent sealer on our tiles, which apparently most companies wouldn't be able to strip off. However we rang a couple of places to check them out. No luck. A friend of mine recommended Tile Cleaners. We rang the guys and they agreed to have a look the next day. We decided to go ahead with the job after getting a satisfactory quote. The Tile Cleaners team stripped and resealed our old tiles. We are very grateful for your help guys. Thank you again

I just got new tiles laid in my house that were very expensive. I needed to get them sealed but couldn't afford to pay much for it. On the other hand I didn't want to go for a company offering cheap and unreliably services. My boss recommended Tile Cleaners, saying that the company's prices were reasonable and that they offered quality service when he used them. I contacted them and ended up doing a booking with them. It is very pleasant to know that there are companies out there who actually care about providing very high quality services for affordable prices. I gave your contacts to my sister. Thank you for the job you did.

I was about to sell my business and wanted to clean and reseal the vinyl floors to improve the looks of them before having people over for inspection of the property. I did a booking with another company but was horrified when I realized that my floor was back to its horrible look in less than two weeks. I carefully looked up other cleaning companies, scared that I would chose the wrong cleaning company. A friend of mine recommended Tile Cleaners, but after what happened to my floor last time I got it cleaned I was really skeptic, but gave it a go. All I can say is thank you guys so much for a quick response and a good job. I sold the office and left your contact details with the new owner for future cleaning.

What is Terracotta?

Terracotta is a ceramic material that has been used for building construction and decorative arts since ancient times in cultures around the world. Terracotta, which literally means "baked earth," is made from natural clay, which gives it a characteristic reddish-brown color. The color varies slightly depending on the clay used. Terracotta is hard-baked, brownish red earthen ware, often glazed and colored may be glazed for extra durability or to provide color. Usually hand-made and varies in color, texture and appearance. The colors range from natural earthtones such as gray and brownish yellow to various shades of red. It is a waterproof and very sturdy material.

When used indoors, terra cotta tile floors can be left raw, but more often, terra cotta is finished with a top coat sealer. Some terra-cotta tiles are purported to be waterproof. To the contrary, all raw clay tiles are like sponges when it comes to soaking up water.

Terracotta may come prefinished or require application of various types of sealers or coatings on site to provide a wearing surface. May crumble or show wear quickly unless sealed and laid on water proof layer. Terra Cotta should never be installed in a high-traffic area, and should never be cleaned at pressures above 1100 PSI and then only if the grout is in good condition.

Sealing Terracotta Tiles

Terra cotta tiles are beautiful, and they lend an informal and somewhat rustic or even southwestern air to residential floors. As a raw product, it is always recommended that this type of flooring be sealed after installation. A professional tile cleaner having a thorough knowledge of the different sealers available as well as their application instructions should be used.

If you've chosen terracotta, it's likely that you're looking for an old looking rustic design, so a natural old sealant will be the way to go.

Frequently Asked Questions

When we talk about a "sealer," we are referring to a liquid or carrier that contains a resin. This substance is applied to porous surfaces, whether they are natural stone or man-made materials. The primary function of a sealer is to provide protection against staining caused by water and/or oil-based materials. By applying the sealer, you can prevent these substances from penetrating and staining the surface. Additionally, a sealer can enhance the overall cleaning results by making it easier to clean and maintain the surfaces effectively.

Terracotta tiles should be sealed to prevent liquids and dirt from penetrating the surface. Sealing is distinct from polishing and serves the purpose of protecting your terracotta surfaces. It is highly recommended to seal all terracotta tiles after installation. The initial seal can provide protection for up to 15 years, depending on the quality of the sealer and the level of wear and exposure. To safeguard your terracotta tiles from accidental damage, it is advisable to contact us promptly after installation for timely protection.

Determining the need to seal your terracotta floors can be based on a few key indicators. Firstly, if your terracotta floors start to look dull or lose their shine, even after regular cleaning, it may be a sign that they need to be stripped, cleaned, and resealed. Additionally, if you notice that your terracotta tiles are becoming prone to staining easily, it is likely that the previous sealer has worn off, and immediate resealing is necessary to prevent permanent staining. Monitoring these visual cues and taking timely action can help maintain the quality and appearance of your terracotta floors.

Our sealing products primarily consist of water-based formulas. We avoid using solvent-based sealers except in specific situations where no alternative is available. It's important to note that the sealer we apply will not alter the texture of your terracotta tiles in any manner. Its purpose is to provide protection against staining and to preserve the desired lustrous finish you desire for your terracotta surfaces.

Absolutely, we provide color enhancing services specifically designed for travertine. The color enhancement process involves the application of a specialized compound that enriches and intensifies the natural appearance of the travertine. By applying the color enhancer, the tiles' tones and hues are deepened, bringing out the inherent beauty of the travertine material. This treatment imparts a subtle wet or low sheen finish, enhancing the overall visual appeal of your travertine surfaces. Our color enhancing services are aimed at highlighting the unique characteristics and enhancing the aesthetics of your travertine.

When our professional team arrives to reseal your terracotta floors, they will guide you through each step of the process, ensuring transparency and clarity. The procedure begins by stripping any existing sealer, if present, followed by a comprehensive cleaning and neutralization of the terracotta to eliminate any dust, residue, or potential contaminants that could impact the effectiveness of the new sealer. Next, a fresh sealer is carefully applied to the dry terracotta surface and allowed to properly set. As a result, your terracotta floors will regain their original appearance, while also benefiting from enhanced protection, making them easier to maintain in the long run.

The duration needed to reseal terracotta floors varies depending on the size of the area being sealed. Typically, most jobs require around 4 to 8 hours for completion. We aim to carry out the cleaning and resealing process within the same day to minimize inconvenience and eliminate the need for multiple appointments.

After the resealing process, the drying time for terracotta tiles depends on the type of sealer used. Penetrating sealers typically become touch dry within 4 hours, while it takes approximately 24 hours for the sealer to fully cure. Once the sealer is fully cured, you can safely place furniture and other objects back onto the tiles and grout. It is important to avoid getting the surfaces wet for at least 24 hours to allow proper curing. In the case of topical sealers, they generally require around 48 hours to fully cure before normal activities can resume.

The lifespan of a sealer before reapplication is influenced by the type of sealer used. Topical sealers typically provide protection for approximately 3 years before requiring reapplication. In contrast, impregnating sealers are more durable and can last up to 15 years or even a lifetime when applied to vertical surfaces. However, areas with high foot traffic or frequent use may necessitate more frequent inspections and resealing to ensure ongoing protection. Conducting a water absorption test can help assess the porosity of the surface and aid in selecting a sealer with longer-lasting durability. It is advisable to refer to the guidelines provided by the manufacturer and consult professionals to determine the specific reapplication schedule suitable for your tiles and grout.

When using Deepshield™ Impregnating Penetrating Sealer, the slipperiness of your terracotta tiles' surface remains unaffected. This is because the sealer penetrates the top layer, specifically the surface pores of the terracotta. However, it's worth noting that applying a Topical Sealer may potentially make your terracotta floors slippery when they are wet. To preserve both the appearance and slip resistance of your terracotta surfaces, it is advisable to seal them with a high-quality, invisible, and fully breathable impregnating sealer. This not only helps maintain the desired look but also prevents moisture from being trapped within the stone, which can be detrimental to its condition.

In order to preserve the fresh and new appearance of your terracotta tiles after sealing them, Tile Cleaners® suggests following a few maintenance steps. Regular cleaning on a weekly basis with a mild detergent is recommended to remove dirt and grime. It is important to avoid using strong detergents with high acidity or alkalinity, as they can potentially affect the sealer. Instead, opt for mild detergents and pH-neutral substances. Our top recommendation for protecting your terracotta tiles is to seal them with one of our highest quality sealers. This provides the best possible protection against staining and helps maintain their pristine condition.

Tile Cleaning follow a pricing structure based on the square meter measurement of each separate room when sealing terracotta tiles. You can find a detailed price list on the Tile Cleaning website for your reference. Prior to commencing the work, our team will conduct individual measurements for each room, discuss the scope of the project, and provide you with a comprehensive cost breakdown, ensuring complete transparency.

When measuring a terracotta area, it is recommended to measure each section individually. The simplest approach is to multiply the width of the area by its length. For example, if a room has dimensions of 3 meters in length and 2 meters in width, the total area can be determined by multiplying 3 by 2, resulting in 6 square meters.

Tile Cleaning provides assistance with moving furniture during the floor sealing process. Their team of dedicated technicians is available to help with the relocation of furniture items that can be reasonably managed by one person, such as those with wheels or lightweight furniture like tables and chairs. However, it is important to keep in mind that while Tile Cleaning takes precautions to protect your belongings, they cannot be held responsible for any damages that may occur during the furniture moving process. To ensure the safety of valuable or fragile items, it is recommended to either relocate them to a secure area or properly secure them before the technicians arrive. By taking these necessary precautions, you can help ensure the safety of your furniture and minimize the risk of potential damage while the floor sealing process is being carried out.

To prepare for the cleaning of terracotta surfaces, it is important to clear the floor of any furniture or objects. This will ensure that the area is ready for the cleaning process upon the arrival of our team.
