Testimonials

I was about to sell my business and wanted to clean and reseal my vinyl floors to improve the looks of them before having people over for inspection of the property. I did a booking with another company but was horrified when I realized that my floor was back to its horrible look in less than two weeks. I carefully looked up other cleaning companies, scared that I would chose the wrong cleaning company. A friend of mine recommended Tile Cleaners, but after what happened to my floor last time I got it cleaned I was really skeptic, but gave it a go. All I can say is thank you guys so much for a quick response and a good job. I sold the office and left your contact details with the new owner for future cleaning.

Brian Hook, Bayswater, WA

I just got new tiles laid in my house that were very expensive. I needed to get them sealed but couldn't afford to pay much for it. On the other hand I didn't want to go for a company offering cheap and unreliably services. My boss recommended Tile Cleaners, saying that the company's prices were reasonable and that they offered quality service when he used them. I contacted them and ended up doing a booking with them. It is very pleasant to know that there are companies out there who actually care about providing very high quality services for affordable prices. I gave your contacts to my sister. Thank you for the job you did

Robert Williams, Norman Park, QLD

I was about to sell my house, but was not happy with the tiles in the dining area. The tiles were white and shiny but the grout looked really dark and dirty. I already had a potential client; however the dark grout ruined the beauty of the room. I didn't have much time to fix the grout and decided to call Tile Cleaners as my real estate agency mentioned them. As my real estate agent said, Tile cleaners responded really quickly. They also pointed out that some of the grout was coming off in the hallway when they were there, which I had not even noticed. Thank you for fixing my problem so quickly. The house is sold now and I left your details with the new owner so they can keep the tiles in good condition.

Sydney Slate Floor Stripped

What is Slate?

Slate is a very dense, but soft and easily scratched material with a low porosity, meaning it will absorb liquids. Slate can be used effectively outdoors as well as indoors although some higher absorbency varieties are unsuitable for exterior areas in freezing climates. Slate is a foliated metamorphic rock derived from shale, consisting mainly of grains of mica and quartz. Most slate is grey to black, but the rock may also feature red or purple depending on its mineral content. The surface of slate is generally uneven with cleft planes that can spall due to the cleaving of the stone along its layers. Slate has a low to medium absorption rate of oils and other liquids. Slate should be sealed with an oil-repellent penetrating sealer to prevent staining and reduce damage. Because of its cleft planes and strong possibility of spalling, slate should not be cleaned at extreme pressures and then only when the grout is in very good condition.

Two main sealing options exist for slate tiles

  • Deep Penetrating Impregnating Sealer
    (Transparent Finish/Colour Enhancing Finish)

  • Topical Sealer
    (Gloss/Satin/Matte Finish)
deepshield slate

A deep penetrating impregnating sealer protects slate and grout from water and oil based stains by chemically reacting with the surface pores using nano-technology to create a breathable protective barrier. An impregnating sealer protects the slate surface and grout from absorbing stains while also resulting in cleaning and maintenance becoming much easier. Australia's Deepshield® range of impregnating water based sealer's, offer long term benefits lasting for up to 10 years while Deepshield Gold®, based on the latest fluoro-bond technology lasts for up to 15 years. A penetrating impregnating transparent sealer enters the pores of your stone and, once cured will not change the look of the tile or stone. A penetrating colour enhancing sealer is designed to enhance and enrich the natural look of stone surfaces.

Tile Cleaners® are the experts at applying all types of sealer and will ensure your slate looks its absolute best. Tile Cleaners® experienced technicians can apply a topical sealer when especially required to create a high gloss, satin sheen or matte finish to your surfaces. Topical sealer is also helpful in situations where the old solvent based sealer can not be completely removed or when required to hide certain types of damage. Topical sealer's have a life expectancy of around 3 years.

You can easily test how porous your natural slate is by applying a drop of water to the surface and watching how the water is absorbed by the slate. You can then see how any type of water based stain can be absorbed by the slate tile surface and grout.

Types of sealer's used on slate tiles

Water based sealer's and solvent-based sealer's can both be used on slate, however unless absolutely required for a specific reason, we always recommend applying a water based sealer that doesn't produce harmful fumes during application and removal. Water based sealers are easier to apply and remove and also require less drying time. One of the most popular product ranges available is Australian made Deepshield® quality impregnating water based sealer's that prolong the life of your surfaces by taking full advantage of recent advancements in nano technology, providing unmatched long-term stain resistance and reliability.

deepshield moisture slate

It is important to ensure the correct water based sealer is applied to your slate tile, which will also depend on whether they are indoors or outdoors as most sealer's will not last long outside due to being designed for internal use. If your slate is outdoors, it is important to use a water based sealer that is specifically designed for outdoor slate.

There are two types of impregnating clear sealer, water based sealer & solvent based. In the past solvent based sealers were more widely used as they used to absorb deeper into the slate and grout and would also last longer. Today however, thanks to new technological advancements, it is recommended only to use water based sealer's, that last much longer and cause less potential damage to health and property.

Solvent based products are more difficult to apply and can create major problems when applied incorrectly as they are very hard to remove. Tile Cleaners® recommend our clients apply a long lasting water based sealer such as a quality product from Australia's Deepshield® range of sealer's to their slate tiles and grout. Topical sealer's (glossy plastic coating over the top of the slate) are still used on slate, but these older style sealer's can trap moisture in the stone and make the surface slippery when wet. When a topical sealer wears in higher traffic areas, the entire surface usually needs to be stripped and re-sealed.

deepshield slate

It is very important to ensure that tiles achieve their cleanest possible condition prior to being sealed. This will protect the appearance of the tile, and importantly ensure that there won't be any dirt, stains or other debris caught under the layer of sealant.

To provide the best possible protection from oil and water-based stains; to maintain the look and slip resistance of your slate and to prevent damaging moisture from being trapped within the stone, it is recommended to seal your slate with a high quality, invisible, fully breathable impregnating sealer.

Slate Floor Stripping & Sealing - Before & After

Frequently Asked Questions

The process of stripping a floor is to ensure that all necessary old and worn sealer is removed; once removed your slate tiles can be resealed.

You will know it's time to have your slate floors stripped, cleaned and sealed once they begin to appear dull or "matte" even after you have given them an efficient regular clean. If you notice that your slate tiles are staining easily, it's a good indication that your previous sealer is wearing off and your slate floors will need to be resealed immediately to prevent permanent staining.

Yes, the slate tile cleaning services provided by Tile Cleaners® are safe. They utilize high-quality water-based products and state-of-the-art cleaning machinery to ensure the best cleaning solution without causing any harm to your slate tiles. Since stone tiles, including slate, are porous and require special care, it is essential to use the appropriate products and equipment to achieve optimal results without compromising the integrity of the tiles. Tile Cleaners® takes pride in their ability to cater to the specific needs of each tile variety, including slate, ensuring a safe and effective cleaning process.

When it comes to the stripping process of your granite tiles, Tile Cleaning prioritizes the use of high-quality non-solvent-based stripping and sealing products. These products are specifically designed to minimize mess and ensure the protection of your granite tiles and other surfaces in your home. With our current non-solvent-based strippers and techniques, there is no significant risk of damaging your walls or skirting boards. In rare cases, where solvent-based strippers may be required, we take extensive safety precautions and ensure that you are properly informed. If such circumstances arise, you may be required to vacate the premises for up to 48 hours to ensure your safety. Rest assured, we prioritize cleanliness and take every measure to safeguard your walls, skirting boards, and other areas of your home throughout the stripping process.

Tile Cleaning places great importance on the safety of your family throughout the cleaning process and guarantees the use of non-toxic finishing agents. Our commitment to safety is rooted in protecting your loved ones by avoiding any potentially harmful substances or ingredients. When selecting cleaning products, Tile Cleaning exercises utmost care to exclude any ingredients that could pose health risks. This approach not only helps preserve the condition of your stone tiles but also exemplifies our dedication to prioritizing the overall health and safety of your household.

If you want your slate floors to be their cleanest and looking their very best you need to have a professional remove as much of the old sealer as possible. Once this is done the cleaning process will be carried out and the sealer applied. You will have the freshest and cleanest possible slate floors once we are finished with the process.

Slate tiles stripping and sealing is simply the process of stripping the coating off the slate floor before resealing it. Slate flooring can look dull and lifeless over time, making it look older and really bringing down the feel of the home. By stripping and resealing, you can bring back the beautiful, lustrous appearance of your slate and eliminate the cost of laying new flooring.

When Tile Cleaning arrive to reseal your slate floors, you can expect a professional team that will guide you through the entire process, ensuring transparency and clarity. The process begins with the removal of any previous sealer, if applied, followed by a thorough cleaning and neutralization of the slate to eliminate dust, residue, and any other substances that could impact the new sealer's effectiveness. Once the slate floor is dry, a new sealer will be carefully applied and allowed to set. This resealing process will not only rejuvenate the appearance of your slate floor, making it look new again, but it will also provide protection and make maintenance easier in the long run. Rest assured that Tile Cleaning follows a systematic approach to deliver quality results and ensure your satisfaction.

The frequency of sealing slate floors depends on several factors such as the type of sealer used and the amount of foot traffic the tiles are subjected to. Australia's Deepshield™ range of deep impregnating water-based sealers, for example, offers long-term benefits, with Deepshield™ Gold having a potential lifespan of up to 15 years. On the other hand, topical sealers typically last around 3 years. However, the actual lifespan can vary based on factors like high foot traffic or severe weather conditions for outdoor tiles. It's important to assess the condition of your slate tiles as well. If you notice patchy areas or they are staining easily, it may indicate the need for resealing. For specific inquiries and assistance, feel free to contact us, and our team will be happy to help.

Slate floors can damage easily, any oily or harsh spills can damage the slate tiles and penetrate the pores leaving a permanent stain, unreachable by domestic cleaning methods. We strongly recommend sealing you slate tiles to keep their natural look and feel, to protect them against permanent staining and to prevent any future accidental damage. They will look their very best for longer and will be easier and more convenient to maintain.

The ideal time to seal slate floors is right after installation to provide immediate protection against accidental staining or damage. As for determining if your slate floors currently require sealing, keep an eye out for patchy areas on the floor where the sealant may have worn off. Additionally, if you notice that your slate tiles are staining more easily than before, it is a clear indication that the existing sealant has deteriorated and resealing is necessary. Monitoring the condition of your slate tiles and being attentive to any changes in their appearance and stain resistance will help you determine when it is time to seal them.

Efflorescence is a problem that slate and most porous tiles can face. It's the tendency of the water in the slate to bring salts from the stone to the surface as it evaporates. The water evaporates leaving the salts on the surface resulting in a whitish coating and ruining its finish. The only way to avoid this problem is to seal your slate tiles with one of our highest quality water resistant sealer's and to stop the source of the water that is penetrating the tiles, for example a water pipe leak or damaged grout.

Yes, Tile Cleaning is able to remove efflorescence buildup from slate tiles. Efflorescence, which is the accumulation of salts, can be effectively eliminated using efflorescence removers and other specialized cleaning techniques. It is worth noting that efflorescence is commonly caused by issues such as water leakage behind the slate tiles or through damaged grout lines. While the efflorescence can be removed, it is crucial to address and resolve the underlying cause to prevent its recurrence. By tackling both the efflorescence buildup and addressing the root cause, Tile Cleaners® can help restore the appearance and integrity of your slate tiles.

To maintain the appearance and keep your slate tiles looking new, Tile Cleaners® suggests cleaning them on a weekly basis using a mild detergent. This regular cleaning routine helps remove dirt and grime from the surface of the slate. It is important to avoid using strong detergents that contain strong acids or alkalis as they can potentially affect the sealer. Instead, opt for mild detergents and pH-neutral substances, which are highly recommended for cleaning slate tiles and preserving the integrity of the sealer. By following these guidelines, you can help ensure that your slate tiles retain their fresh and attractive appearance over time.

Tile Cleaners® charge per square meter for each separate room. There is a price list on the Tile Cleaners® website for you to review. Before we begin our work we will measure each room individually, confirm the work to be carried out as well as confirm all costs with you.

To measure the size of a slate area, it is recommended to measure each room individually. Begin by measuring the width and length of the room. Multiply the width by the length to calculate the total square meterage. For example, if a room is 3 meters long and 2 meters wide, the calculation would be 3 meters * 2 meters = 6 square meters in total. By measuring each room separately and using the width * length method, you can accurately determine the size of the slate area you wish to assess or have restored.

Tile Cleaning provides assistance with moving furniture during the floor sealing process. Their team of dedicated technicians is available to help with the relocation of furniture items that can be reasonably managed by one person, such as those with wheels or lightweight furniture like tables and chairs. However, it is important to keep in mind that while Tile Cleaning takes precautions to protect your belongings, they cannot be held responsible for any damages that may occur during the furniture moving process. To ensure the safety of valuable or fragile items, it is recommended to either relocate them to a secure area or properly secure them before the technicians arrive. By taking these necessary precautions, you can help ensure the safety of your furniture and minimize the risk of potential damage while the floor sealing process is being carried out.

Move all furniture and items off the floor so it is ready for when we arrive.
