My mother's tiles were old and ugly, as she has been living in the same house her entire life without ever really taking care of her tiles. I called Tile Cleaners to get advice on what to do with them. They came to her house the next day to have a look at my mum's tiles. I am very satisfied with how patient and highly professional you were with my mother. I am sorry I couldn't be there when you arrived, and I am really impressed by how you managed to explain everything to my mom and help her out. Thank you for doing a great job.

Angela Coopers, Concord, NSW

I was about to sell my house, but was not happy with the tiles in the dining area. The tiles were white and shiny but the grout looked really dark and dirty. I already had a potential client; however the dark grout ruined the beauty of the room. I didn't have much time to fix the grout and decided to call Tile Cleaners as my real estate agency mentioned them. As my real estate agent said, Tile cleaners responded really quickly. They also pointed out that some of the grout was coming off in the hallway when they were there, which I had not even noticed. Thank you for fixing my problem so quickly. The house is sold now and I left your details with the new owner so they can keep the tiles in good condition.

Anna Rodwell, Tingalpa, QLD

We got our tiles more than 25 years ago. We were told that we had a solvent sealer on our tiles, which apparently most companies wouldn't be able to strip off. However we rang a couple of places to check them out. No luck. A friend of mine recommended Tile Cleaners. We rang the guys and they agreed to have a look the next day. We decided to go ahead with the job after getting a satisfactory quote. Tile Cleaners team stripped and resealed our old tiles. We are very grateful for your help guys. Thank you again.

What is Granite?

Granite is molten lava that never rose above the surface of the earth. Granite is a very hard natural stone denser than marble. A geologist will tell you that it is an igneous or metamorphic rock that is highly saturated with silica. Silica when combined with oxygen makes the mineral quartz, and it has a rating of 7 on the Mohs scale, which determines a materials' hardness. Diamond has a rating of 10. Suffice it to say there are not too many things that will easily scratch granite.

Granite delivers breathtaking beauty unmatched by synthetic materials and a very high level of durability. Granite is used in many roles around the house, from flooring, stair treads and counter tops to wall coverings and beautiful sinks and basins. Granite is a preferred material, due to its extremely high quality, it's easiness to clean and its ability to improve the value of your home.

Sealing Granite Floors

Two main sealing options exist for granite tiles

  • Deep Penetrating Impregnating Sealer
    (Transparent Finish/Colour Enhancing Finish)

  • Topical Sealer
    (Gloss/Satin/Matte Finish)
deepshield granite

A deep penetrating impregnating sealer protects granite and grout from water and oil based stains by chemically reacting with the surface pores using nano-technology to create a breathable protective barrier. An impregnating sealer protects the granite surface and grout from absorbing stains while also resulting in cleaning and maintenance becoming much easier. Australia's Deepshield® range of impregnating water based sealer's, offer long term benefits lasting for up to 10 years while Deepshield Gold®, based on the latest fluoro-bond technology lasts for up to 15 years. A penetrating impregnating transparent sealer enters the pores of your stone and, once cured will not change the look of the tile or stone. A penetrating colour enhancing sealer is designed to enhance and enrich the natural look of stone surfaces.

Tile Cleaners® are the experts at applying all types of sealer and will ensure your granite looks its absolute best. Tile Cleaners® experienced technicians can apply a topical sealer when especially required to create a high gloss, satin sheen or matte finish to your surfaces. Topical sealer is also helpful in situations where the old solvent based sealer can not be completely removed or when required to hide certain types of damage. Topical sealer's have a life expectancy of around 3 years.

You can easily test how porous your granite is by applying a drop of water to the surface and watching how the water is absorbed by the granite. You can then see how any type of water based stain can be absorbed by the granite tile surface and grout.

Types of sealer's used on granite tiles

Water based sealer's and solvent-based sealer's can both be used on granite, however unless absolutely required for a specific reason, we always recommend applying a water based sealer that doesn't produce harmful fumes during application and removal. Water based sealers are easier to apply and remove and also require less drying time. One of the most popular product ranges available is Australian made Deepshield® quality impregnating water based sealer's that prolong the life of your surfaces by taking full advantage of recent advancements in nano technology, providing unmatched long-term stain resistance and reliability.

deepshield moisture granite

It is important to ensure the correct water based sealer is applied to your granite tile, which will also depend on whether they are indoors or outdoors as most sealer's will not last long outside due to being designed for internal use. If your granite is outdoors, it is important to use a water based sealer that is specifically designed for outdoor granite.

There are two types of impregnating clear sealer, water based sealer & solvent based. In the past solvent based sealers were more widely used as they used to absorb deeper into the granite and grout and would also last longer. Today however, thanks to new technological advancements, it is recommended only to use water based sealer's, that last much longer and cause less potential damage to health and property.

deepshield generic granite

Solvent based products are more difficult to apply and can create major problems when applied incorrectly as they are very hard to remove. Tile Cleaners® recommend our clients apply a long lasting water based sealer such as a quality product from Australia's Deepshield® range of sealer's to their granite tiles and grout. Topical sealer's (glossy plastic coating over the top of the granite) are still used on granite, but these older style sealer's can trap moisture in the stone and make the surface slippery when wet. When a topical sealer wears in higher traffic areas, the entire surface usually needs to be stripped and re-sealed.

It is very important to ensure that tiles achieve their cleanest possible condition prior to being sealed. This will protect the appearance of the tile, and importantly ensure that there won't be any dirt, stains or other debris caught under the layer of sealant.

To provide the best possible protection from oil and water-based stains; to maintain the look and slip resistance of your granite and to prevent damaging moisture from being trapped within the stone, it is recommended to seal your granite with a high quality, invisible, fully breathable impregnating sealer.

Frequently Asked Questions

The process of stripping a floor is to ensure that all necessary old and worn sealer is removed; once removed your granite tiles can be resealed.

If your granite floors start to appear dull or matte, even after regular cleaning, it is a clear sign that they require professional cleaning, stripping, and resealing. This indicates that the previous sealer has worn off, leaving the granite tiles vulnerable to staining and lacking their original luster. Additionally, if you notice that the granite tiles are staining easily, it further confirms the need for immediate resealing to prevent permanent staining. By addressing these signs promptly and engaging in the proper cleaning, stripping, and resealing processes, you can restore the beauty and protect the longevity of your granite floors.

Yes, the process of stripping and sealing granite tiles is considered safe. At Tile Cleaners®, we prioritize the safety of our clients and utilize high-quality water-based products along with advanced cleaning machinery to ensure the best cleaning results without compromising the integrity of your granite tiles. We understand that granite tiles require specific care due to their porous nature, and we use appropriate products and equipment to restore them to their optimal condition. When it comes to the stripping process of your granite tiles, Tile Cleaning prioritizes the use of high-quality non-solvent-based stripping and sealing products. These products are specifically designed to minimize mess and ensure the protection of your granite tiles and other surfaces in your home. With our current non-solvent-based strippers and techniques, there is no significant risk of damaging your walls or skirting boards. The purpose of stripping granite surfaces is to ensure that they are thoroughly cleaned and to remove as much of the old sealer as possible. By doing so, you can achieve the cleanest and most visually appealing results for your granite floors. After the stripping process, the cleaning procedure is carried out, followed by the application of a new sealer. This comprehensive process guarantees that your granite floors will appear fresh, clean, and rejuvenated once our professional team completes the job.

The process of stripping and sealing granite tiles involves removing the existing coating or sealer from the surface of the granite floor before applying a new sealant. Over time, granite flooring can become dull and lose its luster, which can negatively impact the overall aesthetics of the home. By undergoing the stripping and sealing process, you have the opportunity to restore the beautiful and radiant appearance of your granite tiles, effectively rejuvenating the flooring. This approach can save you the expense of replacing the entire flooring and instead breathe new life into your existing granite tiles.

When our professional team arrives to reseal your granite floors, they will provide a comprehensive explanation of the job processes, ensuring complete clarity about the procedures involved. The process begins with stripping any previous sealer that may have been applied. Next, the granite floor is meticulously cleaned and neutralized to remove any dust, residue, or other elements that could impact the effectiveness of the new sealer. Once the surface is dry, a fresh sealer is applied and allowed to set. The outcome of this process is a rejuvenated granite floor that not only looks new but is also protected, making it easier to maintain in the long run.

The frequency of sealing granite floors varies based on the type of sealer used and the level of foot traffic they experience. The Deepshield® range of impregnating water-based sealers in Australia, particularly Deepshield Gold® designed for denser surfaces like granite, can offer long-lasting protection for up to 15 years. In contrast, topical sealers generally have a lifespan of around 3 years. However, the actual duration may be influenced by factors such as high foot traffic or severe weather conditions for outdoor tiles, which could necessitate more frequent resealing. Additionally, the condition of the tiles themselves is a significant factor. If you notice patchy areas or easy staining, it may indicate the need for resealing. Feel free to reach out to us for further assistance with any inquiries related to sealing your granite tiles.

Not sealing granite floors can lead to potential issues due to their porous nature. Without proper sealing, the granite tiles can absorb liquids and be prone to staining from oily or harsh spills. These stains can penetrate the pores of the granite and become permanent, making them difficult to remove with regular domestic cleaning methods. By sealing your granite tiles, you can preserve their natural appearance, protect them against permanent staining, and prevent future accidental damage. Sealed granite floors maintain their beauty for a longer period and are easier to maintain and clean. Therefore, it is strongly recommended to seal your granite tiles to ensure they look their best and remain in optimal condition.

The ideal moment to seal your granite floors is right after their installation, as this helps prevent any potential accidental staining or damage. If you observe patchy sealed areas on your granite tiles or notice that they are becoming more prone to staining, these are clear indications that your granite floors are in need of sealing. By addressing these signs promptly, you can ensure the long-term protection and beauty of your granite floors.

Efflorescence can be a common issue with porous tiles like granite. It occurs when water in the granite carries salts to the surface as it evaporates. This process leaves behind a whitish coating and can damage the finish of the granite. To prevent efflorescence, it is recommended to seal your granite tiles with a high-quality water-resistant sealer. Additionally, identifying and addressing the source of water penetration, such as a water pipe leak or damaged grout, is crucial. By sealing the tiles and resolving any water-related issues, you can minimize the occurrence of efflorescence and maintain the quality and appearance of your granite floors.

Yes, we can remove the built-up efflorescence on your granite tiles. Efflorescence is a result of salt buildup and can be effectively treated using specialized cleaning techniques and efflorescence removers. It is important to note that efflorescence is often caused by underlying issues such as water leakage behind the granite tiles or damaged grout lines. Therefore, while we can remove the efflorescence, it is crucial to address and resolve the root cause to prevent its recurrence. Our team is experienced in identifying and addressing these underlying issues to provide a comprehensive solution for efflorescence removal and prevention.

To maintain the appearance of your granite tiles and keep them looking new, it is recommended to clean them weekly using a mild detergent. This will help remove any dirt or grime that may have accumulated on the surface. It is important to avoid using strong detergents with high acidity or alkalinity, as they can potentially affect the sealer on the granite. Instead, opt for mild detergents and pH neutral substances, which are safe and effective for cleaning granite tiles. By regularly cleaning your granite tiles with the proper cleaning agents, you can preserve their natural beauty and extend their lifespan.

Tile Cleaning charges for stripping and sealing granite tiles based on a per square meter basis for each separate room. To provide accurate pricing, the team will measure each room individually and discuss the scope of work with you. You can find a detailed price list on the Tile Cleaning website for your reference. Rest assured that all costs will be confirmed with you before the work commences to ensure transparency and clarity.

To accurately measure the size of a granite area, it is recommended to measure each area individually. The most straightforward method is to multiply the width of the area by its length. For instance, if a room measures 3 meters in length and 2 meters in width, the total area would be calculated as 3 multiplied by 2, resulting in a total of 6 square meters. By measuring each granite area separately and calculating the total square meters, you can ensure precise measurements for accurate pricing and planning purposes.

Tile Cleaning provides assistance with moving furniture during the floor sealing process. Their team of dedicated technicians is available to help with the relocation of furniture items that can be reasonably managed by one person, such as those with wheels or lightweight furniture like tables and chairs. However, it is important to keep in mind that while Tile Cleaning takes precautions to protect your belongings, they cannot be held responsible for any damages that may occur during the furniture moving process. To ensure the safety of valuable or fragile items, it is recommended to either relocate them to a secure area or properly secure them before the technicians arrive. By taking these necessary precautions, you can help ensure the safety of your furniture and minimize the risk of potential damage while the floor sealing process is being carried out.

To prepare for the cleaning of your granite surfaces, it is recommended to move all furniture and items off the floor. This allows the cleaning team to have unobstructed access to the granite surfaces and ensures that the area is ready for their arrival. By clearing the floor of furniture and items, you can facilitate a smooth and efficient cleaning process for your granite surfaces.
