What is Travertine?

Travertine Paver Travertine is a form of limestone, and is related to marble, actually falling somewhere between marble and limestone in terms of its development over thousands of years, deposited by mineral springs, especially hot springs, underground rivers and other water sources.

Travertine often has a fibrous or concentric appearance and exists in white, tan and cream-colored varieties. It is formed by a process of rapid precipitation of calcium carbonate, often at the mouth of a hot spring or in a limestone cave. In the latter it can form stalactites, stalagmites and other speleothems. It is frequently used in Italy and elsewhere as a building material.

The resulting stone is a smooth and very hard substance further characterized by its porous surface. These pores are the result of gases escaping as the travertine is formed.

By the time it is quarried, travertine is naturally beautiful - a smooth, dense stone that exhibits a notable creamy color that evokes a certain old-world refinement.

Extensive deposits exist at Tivoli, Italy, near Rome. In fact, travertine derives its name from this town. Tivoli was known as Tibur in ancient Roman times. The ancient name for the stone was lapis tiburtinus meaning tibur stone, which has been corrupted to travertine.

Sealing Travertine Pavers

Travertine can be left in its natural state, with no polishing. Etched by acids. Porous with many visible holes, often filled with epoxy. Polishing unfilled travertine can be tricky. Polishing powders tend to accumulate in the holes and can make clean-up difficult. Because it is soft and has epoxy-filled holes, it should never be cleaned at pressures above 800 PSI and then only if the grout is in good condition.

Sealants are layer forming treatments that produce a shiny (or natural) protective film on the surface. This sealer must be stripped and re applied from time to time. Different sealants are recommended for indoors than outdoors, and sealants cant vary in type, lifetime (durability), stain protective properties, and slipp resisting properties.

Travertine, like other calcareous stones, is referred to as acid sensitive. Calcareous stones are readily dissolved in acid, therefore acidic products should not be used on Travertine tiles.

Stripping Travertine Pavers

As Travertine tiles can be sealed, this sealer may need to be removed and re-applied after it starts to wear off, this usually depends on type of sealer used, method used to apply it and the amount of traffic or use. This process is called stripping and sealing, and is usually required every 2-10 years depending on type of sealer, area used (indoor or outdoor), and amount of traffic or use.

Sealers serve a distinct purpose from polishes as they are specifically formulated to prevent liquids and dirt particles from penetrating the surface of natural stone. The sealing of your travertine tiles is of utmost importance. It is recommended to have all travertine tiles sealed upon their initial installation, as this initial seal can provide protection for up to 15 years. To ensure the preservation of your travertine floors and prevent any potential permanent damage, it is advisable to contact us promptly after the installation of your travertine floors so that we may apply the necessary protection.

Tile Cleaners® recommend conducting a simple "water test" to determine if your travertine floors need sealing. This well-known test in the stone industry involves placing a few drops of water on the stone and allowing it to sit for approximately 10 to 30 minutes. Afterward, wipe the water dry. If the stone does not darken, it indicates that your travertine is already sealed and does not require additional sealing. However, if the water causes the stone to darken, it suggests that the water was able to penetrate the stone, indicating the need for sealing.

All the sealers used by Tile Cleaners® are water-based. Solvent-based sealers are only used in specific cases when they are the only suitable option. The application of the sealer will not have any impact on the texture of your travertine tiles. Instead, it will provide protection against staining while preserving the natural, glossy appearance of your travertine.

The lifespan of a sealer before reapplication is influenced by the type of sealer used. Topical sealers typically provide protection for approximately 3 years before requiring reapplication. In contrast, impregnating sealers are more durable and can last up to 15 years or even a lifetime when applied to vertical surfaces. However, areas with high foot traffic or frequent use may necessitate more frequent inspections and resealing to ensure ongoing protection. Conducting a water absorption test can help assess the porosity of the surface and aid in selecting a sealer with longer-lasting durability. The effect of a sealer on the slipperiness of travertine floors depends on the type of sealer used. Deepshield™ Impregnating Penetrating Sealer, for example, does not alter the slipperiness of the travertine surface as it penetrates the top layer of the tiles. However, using a topical sealer may increase the slipperiness of travertine floors when wet. To maintain both the appearance and slip resistance of your travertine while preventing moisture damage, it is recommended to apply a high-quality, invisible, fully breathable impregnating sealer to the surfaces.

To safeguard your travertine tiles from acid etching, it is crucial to understand that any acidic substance poses a threat as it can easily corrode or eat away at the surface. Protecting against acid attacks can be challenging, as sealing the tiles specifically for acid resistance is difficult. The most effective method of prevention involves promptly sealing the tiles and promptly cleaning up any spills. Given the high porosity of stone-based tiles like travertine, sealing becomes essential to offer protection against both future acid attacks and liquid spillage.

To maintain the pristine appearance of your travertine tiles and grout, it is essential to follow a regular cleaning routine. Tile Cleaners® suggests cleaning the tiles on a weekly basis using a mild detergent. This gentle cleaning agent will effectively remove any dirt or grime from the travertine surface without compromising the integrity of the sealant. It is important to avoid using strong detergents that contain harsh acids or alkalis, as they can potentially damage the sealer. Opting for mild detergents and pH-neutral substances is highly recommended to ensure the longevity of both the tiles and the sealant.
