What is Grout?

Grout is a thick substance or paste formed with the combination of sand, water and cement and used as a construction material to seal the spaces between tiles or concrete. This paste is spread over and between the tiles once the tiles are put in place on the floor or the walls. Although the tiles stick to the floor or wall with the help of cement, the white (sometimes coloured) grout is used to hold the tiles together and to fill up the spaces (seal) between the tiles with a neutral coloured paste. It gives a clean finish to the entire surface and also prevents water or any other substance from seeping beneath the tiles.

Grout is porous meaning that it can easily be penetrated by moisture and dirt. The build up of dirt and moisture in the porous grout means in the worst circumstances it can turn black as well as harbour odours and bacteria.

Why Clean Grout?

With the increase in use of tiles and natural stone by both architects and the general public in recent years cleanliness has become rather problematic. General off the shelf cleaners and a mop may appear to be working when the surface is new but eventually the dirt and soil begins to build up, tiles start to look bland, grout lines lose their colour and can start to turn black.

On running your finger along a grout line it will probably feel greasy, this is due to constant mopping or conventional cleaning which tends to loosen the dirt, move it around and then deposit it in the grout lines. Clear sealing involves applying a colourless protective treatment, this is not a coating that sits on the surface but an impregnation that not only seals, but also allows the grout to breath. It is recommended that all natural materials are clear sealed, limestone, sandstone, travertine and slate to name but a few. The clear seal helps prevent contamination from spillages of tea, coffee, wine, beer etc, it also prevents the build up of algae, moss and verdigree when used outside.
